Blue Lagoon: The Awakening is an American television film that premiered on Lifetime Television on June 16, 2012.[1] The movie is a remake of the various versions of the theatrical movie of the same name.[2] Brenton Thwaites and Indiana Evans were cast in the lead roles.[3] Denise Richards appeared in a supporting role, and Christopher Atkins, the male lead of the 1980 film version made a cameo.[4]
Emma and Dean are two high school students who are polar opposites of one another: Emma is beautiful, tremendously popular, gregarious, affable, meticulous, and an over achiever, while Dean by choice prefers the company of himself, takes life one day at a time with no worries, is outspoken and often times overly sarcastic. Emma's superficial friends are pressuring her to date the school quarterback as it seems that he is attempting to court her; however, Emma occasionally secretly shows slight interest in Dean by stealing glances at him, as does Dean with her, much to her friends' disapproval. When the school organizes a class trip to Trinidad for the students to help the local community there, Emma's friends hope Emma will use the opportunity to finally get to know and hang out with Stephen, the quarterback. Emma is excited for the trip, while Dean shows limited interest in attending, but ultimately decides to at the urging of his attorney father.
The class departs for the island and upon arrival, they have fun at the hotel pool while Dean observes from the balcony of his hotel room. Later that evening, several students on the trip sneak off to a Carnival party on a boat owned by a local. Emma has reservations about going, but her friends pressure her into joining them knowing that Stephen will be on the boat and once again, wanting Emma to hook up with him. The students get on board and the boat leaves the dock. While on board during the festivities, Emma observes Stephen kissing another girl and is slightly disappointed. Dean, apparently also on the boat, witnesses Emma's show of disappointment over seeing Stephen hooking up with another girl and makes a snide comment to her, knowing that she likely wanted to be the one to hook up with him, which is returned with a retort from Emma before walking away. The boat is then stopped and boarded by the local authorities. In the panic, Emma is accidentally knocked overboard. Dean witnesses this and jumps in after her. He reaches her and they climb into the dinghy, which Dean summarily unlatches from the boat, apparently not being able to afford any more trouble with the law. Both the police boat and the party boat pull away, leaving Emma and Dean in the middle of the sea. Inclement weather arrives, and Emma and Dean take cover under a tarp and drift away. The next morning, they wake up to a sunny day and find themselves still adrift in the middle of the Caribbean Sea. They argue briefly about what they are going to do regarding their current predicament. Emma then spots an island in the distance, and they begin to paddle in its direction.
Meanwhile at the hotel, the class trip has been canceled due to the students' actions on the boat, and Emma's friends report her missing to the chaperone of their group. Coincidentally, Dean is found to be missing as well when he does not show up for attendance call with his respective group; however, it is unclear to the group as to whether or not Emma and Dean are missing together or separately, as Emma's friends testify that they don't recall having ever seen Emma with Dean the previous evening on the boat. The police conduct a search but show little concern, believing this not to be uncommon among teenagers on vacation, and are likely able to be easily located. Emma's overly protective parents and Dean's father are notified of their missing children, and hastily fly to Trinidad.
After paddling for a short amount of time, Emma and Dean reach the island. Believing there is likely a hotel nearby somewhere, Dean gathers a flare gun out of the dinghy and they set out on foot to explore the island, bickering back and forth the entire time with one another, with Dean often referring to Emma sarcastically as "Prom Queen"; a name which Emma never really understands being that she has never been prom queen, nor ever wanted to be. After traversing the entire length of the island and finding no hotel, nor any sign of human life for that matter, they return to the beach where they initially came ashore, only to find that the dinghy had apparently drifted away in the time that they were gone. With no wireless signal or any way off the island, they realize that it's demonstrable they merely have no choice but to wait until they are rescued, with Dean believing that people must be out there looking for them due to Emma's popularity.
Back on the mainland, the local authorities deem the search for Emma and Dean to now be a search and recovery operation as opposed to a search and rescue effort. However, Emma's parents and Dean's father organize their own search efforts which are largely subsidized by Dean's father, but ultimately come to the realization that they have done all they could, and are left with little options now but to finally go home and simply hope for the best.
While together on the island, days turn into weeks, and weeks eventually turn into a month for Emma and Dean. Knowing they have nobody else, they rely on each other for survival. They have set up a shelter on the beach, and initially use the fruit on the island as their food source, but Dean begins fishing as well after growing tired of eating nothing but fruit. They spend the days swimming, and progressively getting to know and warming up to one another. Emma often notices Dean quietly gazing out at the horizon at sunset each evening, and Emma finally inquires as to why this is. Dean tells her that his mother told him about the myth of "Green flash", which is a phenomena where one can sometimes catch a fleeting glimpse of a flash of green on the horizon just as the sun is setting, but he has yet to see it and doubts that it exists. One day, Dean finds a skeleton on the island near their shelter and Emma is traumatized, fearing that is an indicator of their future. She flees and begins to sob, and Dean pursues her and begins to comfort her, telling her that the skeleton found is not them and they don't have to and won't end up that way, that they will either be rescued or survive on their own if needs be. With emotions running high at the moment, Dean passionately kisses Emma and the two realize their growing attraction to one another, which culminates in them having sex that evening on the beach by their fire.
The next morning, Emma awakes and finds Dean to be missing. She wanders through the jungle searching for him and eventually finds him in a clearing, digging a grave for the skeleton that he found earlier out of frustration while sobbing. Emma begins to castigate him, demanding why he would abruptly leave without saying anything, and why he is doing this. In his frustration, Dean angrily tells her that the skeleton they found deserves to be buried, and have a proper burial. Clearly realizing something is bothering him due to his frustration and sudden aberrant behavior, Emma relents and begs Dean to tell her what is bothering him and what he's feeling. Dean, still frustrated, angrily tells Emma that just because they merely had sex once, this in no way makes them closer and they have to realize that they are still stuck on an island, simply attempting to survive. Upset by this sudden turn of behavior, Emma continues to plead with Dean to talk to her and ends up stumbling and sustaining a laceration to her knee. Dean rushes to her aid and brings her to a beautiful blue lagoon, also containing a waterfall, that they found earlier while initially exploring the island, to clean and tend to her laceration. After having now calmed down, Dean confides to Emma that he recently lost his mother in a car accident after his soccer practice, which he feels responsible for. He never attended her funeral, and he was under the conception that by burying the skeleton, it would hopefully bring him closure regarding not attending his mother's funeral. He states to Emma that he truly needs her in order to continue to survive, and wouldn't be able to do so without her companionship. Emma then takes Dean skinny dipping in the lagoon underneath the waterfall and they delve deeper into each other's pasts, and romance one another.
Throughout the next few weeks, the two swim and explore their tropical island paradise together, having fun, kissing, and enjoying each other's company and companionship, falling deeper into one another. They now watch the sunsets together, and ultimately end up witnessing a green flash on the horizon together. One afternoon, after having finished having sex inside of their shelter, they lie together and Emma wonders what everyone else back in civilization is doing, and asks if they should feel guilty that they have been making fun out of their situation and aren't sad, considering that their families think they're dead. Dean doesn't seem overly concerned, seemingly thinking that he is happier on the island than he is back home, and states to Emma that for the moment being, they only need to focus on each other. The conversation shifts and Emma asks Dean about his past sexual experiences. He confides to her that his "first time" was with a college girl which didn't last very long, and he simply thought he could learn a thing or two from her, and that it meant nothing to him. In a joking, but serious question, Emma asks Dean how she compared to the college girl, and they jest with one another, with Dean laughing and stating the college girl doesn't even compare to Emma. Dean then inquires about Emma's past sexual experiences, and she embarrassingly admits to Dean that it was him, which surprises Dean given her beauty and popularity. However, they both acknowledge that they are glad her first time was with him.
While Emma slumbers, Dean briefly goes out exploring, and hears and eventually sees a plane overhead. Dean races back and alerts Emma, but neither of them can find the flare gun in the spot where they last left it, and the plane keeps going without seeing them. They also notice that several of their other items are also missing, and out of frustration for not having been seen by the plane, they begin to cast blame at each other for the missing gun and items. With tension in the air, the pair sit on the beach in silence, staring out at the water. Dean hears a subtle apparent growl in the jungle from the tree line behind them and he decides to go investigate out of boredom, as Emma earlier on occasion claimed that she believed there was "something" out there. Dean wanders through the jungle, and encounters a melanistic jaguar ("black panther"). After making eye contact, Dean races off into the jungle in an effort to escape the large cat, and the jaguar immediately pursues. Emma hears the commotion, and runs into the jungle to find Dean. As Dean attempts to hurdle a large stump, he trips and the jaguar pounces, but Dean, in possession of his survival knife, stabs and mortally wounds the cat just as Emma catches up and finds Dean covered in blood with the dead cat beside him.
They return to the lagoon and skinny dip and Emma helps Dean clean all of his lacerations from his encounter with the jaguar. They romance one another and spend their next few weeks swimming and continuing to romance one another. One morning, Emma gets sick to her stomach and Dean wonders if she may perhaps be pregnant. She reassures him that she isn't and lies down next to Dean. The pair converses, and Dean brings up the notion that perhaps remaining on their island paradise and starting a life there may not be such a bad idea, which infuriates Emma, as she intends on getting home. Just then, some of their earlier missing items fall from a tree, and they observe a monkey holding their flare gun who turns out to be the culprit for their items mysteriously going missing. The monkey eventually drops the flare gun as well, and scampers away.
After roughly three months on the island, Emma and Dean are rescued by a helicopter pilot who spots the pair while flying over the island, and they return home. Emma is greeted by her parents and her several friends, while Dean is greeted by his father. Emma is the center of attention and is once again tremendously popular among her friends and begins to slightly ignore Dean, which saddens him, though they still often observe each other at distances without speaking. Emma one evening attempts to call Dean, but Dean ignores her call. Dean visits his mother's grave and tells her that he was able to witness the green flash, apologizes for not being able to attend her funeral, and thanks her for watching over him and Emma. Prom arrives and Emma is expected to attend with Stephen (the quarterback) as her date, but states that she has no intentions on going with him, and attends by herself. Dean initially elects not to attend, but then ultimately decides to. Emma's once superficial friends find her wandering around the dance floor by herself, and suggest they go search and find her a date. They lead Emma to a glass door, where Dean is standing outside in the pouring rain in his tuxedo. Emma's friends urge her to go to him, and leave so she can do so. They reconcile and Dean presents her with a corsage and asks her to dance, once again referring to her as "Prom Queen", but this time in a joking manner. Emma reminds Dean that it's pouring rain, and Dean states that they have been through worse, as they share a kiss and the film ends with the couple embracing one another, slow dancing in the rain.
